Designers will have hands-on experience using Rhino and FastShip in the ship design and analysis process.
You will learn how to:

Use basic commands and tools to create 2-D geometry. Use this geometry     to create surfaces and solids
Accurately and easily model and edit free-from organic shapes. Rhino can     model most any shape imaginable
Create marine structures like hulls, superstructures, appendages, etc. with     the ability to design fair surfaces quickly and accurately.
Incorporate into the model features such as bossing, bulbous bows, twin     skegs, chines/knuckles, broken sheerlines, and circular bilge turns.
     Determine hydrostatic characteristics
Use Flamingo to render your model for presentation (Sneak Preview!)

The first two days will cover modelling with Rhino. The last three days will focus on FastShip's ship design capabilities and rendering with Flamingo.

Rhino3D is a leading surface modeller used by product designers and manufacturers around the world.

Rhinoceros is a NURBS modeler for Windows with unique features :

  • Free-form 3-D curve, surface, and solid modeling. Rhino can model anything, no matter how daring.
  • Accuracy needed to design, prototype, engineer, analyze, and manufacture any detail from huge to small.
  • Compatibility with all your other design, drafting, CAM, engineering, analysis, rendering, animation, and illustration software.
  • Accessible. So easy to learn and use that you can focus on design and visualization without being distracted by the software.
  • Direct 3-D digitizer support. Capture physical models directly.
  • Fast, even on an ordinary laptop computer. No special hardware needed.

Rhino3D has earned good marks over time, and has been accepted as a perfect companion for FastShip, the world's best hull design program by Proteus Engineering, also represented by DS&T.

The combination of FastShip and Rhino3D is unbeatable in the modelling of marine structures, merging the power of FastShip's free-form modelling and Rhino3D's detailing tools.

FastShip and Rhino3D exchange information via the industry standard IGES interface, allowing combined models to be manipulated and analysed in FastShip, (including of course station, waterline and buttock fairness evaluation, surface curvature, hydrostatics and stability, etc.)

Rhino 3.0 - Features

Unlike other Rhino upgrades, Rhino 3.0 is a ground-up rewrite that provides a modern user interface, a new geometry core, and a robust new development environment. There are also a few major new features and enhancements. Here are some details:

Rhino 3.0 is a ground up rewrite. Because Rhino was full of old technology, we needed a rewrite using the latest tools and based on the latest technology in order to move forward.

New geometry core. Rhino was based on a licensed geometry library, most of which was replaced in Rhino 2.0, but in order to continue enhancing the user interface, a complete rewrite was needed.

New user interface pipeline. Since the original Rhino was written for Windows 3.1, there was no provision for graphics hardware acceleration or localized languages. Because of the new core, Rhino 3.0 supports the latest graphics hardware and will be fully translated into French, German, Italian, Spanish, Czech, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. Rhino now also supports working in shaded and analysis views.

New development tools allow developers to rapidly add new features. For example, Rhino can be run in the background from other Windows applications like Visual Basic, Excel, and Internet Explorer. The new 3.0 C++ SDK gives third-party developers access to almost everything that we use in-house.

Rhino 3.0 will allow us and third-party developers to rapidly add new features.
Rhino 3.0's other enhancements and refinements include :

  • Enhanced user interface (Dockable dialogs, auto-completion, discoverable command options, clickable command options, multiple monitor support)
  • Localized interface and documentation (Spanish, German, Italian, French, Czech, and Japanese in January and Korean, and Chinese later in 2003)
  • OpenGL hardware acceleration and anti-aliasing supported
  • Viewport modes now include wire, shaded, ghosted, flat, X-ray, rendered, selected, analysis including curvature, draft angle, zebra, environment map, show edges, and show naked edge
  • Perspective dimensions
  • Raytrace rendering with support for more light types
  • Blocks
  • Worksessions
  • Point Clouds
  • SelVisible command
  • Command enhancements
  • Scripting enhancements
  • Enhanced SDK for more powerful third-party applications
  • New technology core

What's next

We are never done. As with all software, each release is followed by a few service releases to fix bugs. Since much of the core Rhino is new, we expect that users will find bugs that were missed in the six months of field testing. Rhino 3.0 users with an internet connection will be automatically notified when a service release is available to download.

Rhino 2.0 has been known for its stability, ease of use (feel), speed, and compatibility. Since Rhino 3.0 is a ground-up rewrite, we will take advantage of the opportunity to continue to make enhancements in these areas.

With the new core, we can now release new features without releasing a completely new version. Shortly after the first of the year, new features will be released as prototypes for design discussion on the newsgroup. These new betas will be available to all 3.0 users, and Rhino 2.0 users until 31-Mar-03.

We do not have a list of the new features for the next release yet, but along with Rhino's traditional focus on free-form 3-D modeling, accuracy, compatibility, data exchange, ease of use, speed, and affordability, Rhino 3.x development will also focus on ease of editing free-form shapes and Rhino as a platform for third-party developers.

Unlike Rhino 3.0, the next release has no concrete deadlines, but here are the current plans:

  • The next Flamingo later in 2003.
  • Many Rhino 3.0-based enhancements (plug-ins) in 2003.
  • The next major Rhino release in early 2004.

As in the past, our development process will be open, and we will be posting details, prototypes, and beta versions on the Rhino newsgroup as they become available.

TreeFrog™

The first new Rhino 3.0 plug-in is now available. TreeFrog is a fast, colorful, basic renderer for Rhino 3.0.

Rhino 3.0 currently ships with a basic raytrace render using the Flamingo engine that supports shadows on all light types and complex models with transparency.

TreeFrog, like Rhino 2.0's base renderer, only supports shadows from spotlights. TreeFrog does not handle transparency on complex models as well as the Flamingo engine, but it is much better than Rhino 2.0.

TreeFrog is very fast, even on more complex models.

TreeFrog will be in beta testing for a few more weeks. It will be included in the first Rhino 3.0 service release as a second basic renderer.

New file formats supported

DATAKIT has just released six new Rhino plug-ins that directly read :

  • Catia V4 2D
  • Catia V4 3D
  • Catia V5 3D
  • Pro/E
  • SolidEdge
  • Unigraphics

"For a VW engine visualization we fortunately used Rhino to convert 800 IGES parts into perfectly optimized high-quality models for SOFTIMAGE. No other converter software was able to do that with the same speed, control and precision. No idea what we had done without Rhino to fullfill the quality proof of the VW engenieers."
