Competitive Advantages
Quickly Find and Train Staff
ShipConstructor's AutoCAD foundation leads to a decrease in required training time. ShipConstructor is built on top of AutoCAD, one of the world's most widely used CAD programs. The AutoCAD foundation provides a population of skilled workers already familiar with the basic tools and general look and feel of the software. Additionally, ShipConstructor is a suite of products targeted specifically at the shipbuilding and offshore industries. This basic philosophy behind the technology allows clients to directly interact with the 3D product model of a ship or offshore project in a manner that is natural for their business. Users with a solid foundation of AutoCAD skills and a decent understanding of the industry are armed with the tools required to quickly become proficient with the software. Competing products are widely recognized as requiring as much as 400% greater training to achieve the same level of proficiency. |

Shorten the Design Process
All departments utilize a single Marine Information Model with associated production output. This means all departments can work within the same model concurrently: responding to changes from other disciplines in real time. Production drawings are dynamically linked to the model so that when the model changes they are automatically updated without any loss of custom detailing. Consequently the engineering team can start production drawings much earlier.
Additionally, seamless integration with Autodesk NavisWorks enables effective design review, allowing production staff to be brought into the design process earlier. This can significantly reduce late design changes and errors in production. |
Communicate effectively with the Supply Chain
The native format of ShipConstructor is DWG which is one of the most common standards for data exchange. ShipConstructor can also consume and create virtually any format required for communication with associated service providers in the shipbuilding industry including Autodesk DWG, DXF, DWF, SAT, STEP, IGES, and 3DM. This level of interoperability makes it far easier to import information from suppliers, manufacturers and subcontractors into ShipConstructor. |

Adapt to your business's specific requirements
ShipConstructor has created an open architecture and is committed to a best of breed approach to meeting the requirements of the shipbuilding and offshore industries. Integration and interoperability are supported by an open, accessible relational database with numerous APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). This enables ShipConstructor to work with a variety of software packages including initial design, FEA, PLM and ERP applications.
A natural byproduct of this commitment to collaboration is customization; the open architecture provides clients with the foundation to adapt the software and maintain a competitive advantage. In addition to ShipConstructor's own APIs, clients can utilize the Autodesk ObjectARX API included with AutoCAD and currently in use by more than 2500 developers worldwide to customize the ShipConstructor product suite. |

Database Driven Relational Object Model (DDROM)
ShipConstructor implements a revolutionary technology called DDROM™, harnessing the power of relational databases. We have managed to make relational design as easy as driving a car.
Advantages:
- Powerful 3D modeling
- Reduce cost and time of design
- No 'astronaut' required to 'fly the space shuttle'
The DDROM Concept
The Product Data Model (PDM) geometry is stored in the ShipConstructor database and linked through relationships, thus creating DDROM objects. DDROM objects are also linked to various attributes such as materials, weights, drawings, revisions, and build strategies. This means there is one and only one location for all geometry.
Advantages:
- All data in one central location
- All drawings generated from the same data
- Everything is always up to date
Viewports Into The Database
The CAD drawings are just like viewports into the database, letting the user focus just on the detail of interest. This can be compared to using binoculars to see items of interest much clearer while filtering out things that are not of interest.
One-Click Part Definition
Start with the waterline for the outline of a deck. Next, draw the lines representing the seams and butts as well as any holes. Just click inside of any 'region' in the drawing and select a plate stock to define the part. ShipConstructor automatically generates the toolpath, part name, weight & CG, and generates the relationships between all entities. Now, you can simply move any butt or seam and all related parts will be updated instantly.
Advantages:
- Automatic part definition
- Automatic linking of geometry and attribute data
- Automatic part updates
- Automatic weight and CG updates
Design Once And Reuse
Consider you have to design several frames that are similar but have different hull traces. Simply design one of the frames, then replicate the geometry to the other frames and exchange the hull trace. Designing many similar frames now only takes a fraction of the time.
Advantages:
- No complicated procedures or programming
- Fast design
- Reduced errors
Easily Deal With Changes
Any drawing (frame, deck, longitudinal) can be easily linked to other drawings making major design changes easy. Consider moving a deck up by several hundred millimetres. All frames and longitudinals linked to the deck willautomatically update.
Advantages:
- Save change time
- Nothing will be forgotten
- All production drawings (assembly, nest, etc.) will be updated as well

The DDROM Concept

Define a part with a single click of the mouse

Design one part and then replicate it

Making a major design change is now simple

SHIPCONSTRUCTOR MODULES
The ShipConstructor suite of software is modular-based, providing the opportunity for maximum customization. By separating the suite into task-based modules, you are able to assemble a ShipConstructor package that best fits the needs and requirements for your operation. All modules access the same central database providing relational data.
Available modules are:
Setup and Security
Manager
 |
The ShipConstructor Manager allows administrators and experienced designers to create user and group permissions, adjust project settings, build central stock catalogs and define standards, parametric standards and reusable standard assemblies. Changes are made through a tightly controlled process and are stored in a secure Microsoft SQL Server central database which gives administrators peace of mind. Any changes are automatically reflected throughout the model and all production documents. |
Design and Detail
Hull/ShipCAM
 |
Hull combines proven ShipCAM surfacing technology with new smart surface objects and the simplicity of working inside of AutoCAD. This brings together the best of two worlds, allowing for easy and intuitive creation and manipulation of complex surface models in Hull while also allowing the freedom to use standard AutoCAD drafting techniques.
Hull provides powerful features such as surface-surface intersection, surface trimming, plate expansion, structural section definition, shell expansion, shell stringer definition, offset book printing, and pin jig drawing generation. The data designed in the external hull production model flows freely into the Structure module. |
Structure
 |
Structure combines 3D structural production detailing with the ease of 2D drafting. With the introduction of the DDROM in ShipConstructor 2008, ShipConstructor users now enjoy the benefit of both parametric and associative structure modeling. Individual drafters working in planar groups develop a 3D product model and logical relationships while using basic AutoCAD functionality. Structure has many shipbuilding specific CAD features such as dynamic stiffener cutouts in plates, automatic stiffener marking, plate flanges, standard brackets and much more. |
Pipe
 |
Pipe is a complete production detailing package for pipe systems. Pipe modeling is based on a parametric catalog of pipe and hanger stocks and standards with logical connections between parts in the model. A powerful constraint based modeling system allows intuitive changes to parts in a piping system while intelligently modifying connected parts. Pipe spools can be defined which are carried over into production for the creation of spool drawings. |
HVAC
 |
Similar to the Pipe module, HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) integrates with all of the other ShipConstructor modules and encourages collaboration between departments. HVAC can be based on a parametric catalog of stocks or can be driven by on-the-fly item creation depending on the clients needs. The software employs the same constraint based modeling engine used in ShipConstructor Pipe.
|
Electrical
 |
Electrical is a full production-oriented electrical package for ShipConstructor. It covers the full range of requirements for offshore and shipbuilding projects beginning with allocating space for major wireways and ending with cable installation diagrams, pull sheets and reporting. The powerful constraint-based modeling system allows changes to wireway systems that trickle down to cable hangers and cable length providing accurate cable lengths even when changes are made. Intelligent wireways allow for automatic cable routing between equipment. *ShipConstructor Electrical is still in the final stages of development. |
Weld Management
 |
Weld is a full production and management system for structural welds in ShipConstructor. This module provides the ability to fully custom weld symbols and standards as well as the ability to develop a weld schedule for each particular project. Once welds have been defined in the project (including automatic identification and weld path generation) weld information can automatically be included in ShipConstructor production output like 3D assembly drawings. Changes to the model and welds will flag each affected production drawing as out-of-date, and allow you to automatically update on demand. |
Penetrations
 |
The Penetrations Module allows the creation of intelligent penetrations through structural members. The parametric spec-based penetration standards support many powerful features such as multi-pipe (and HVAC) penetrations and penetration accessory items. Each penetration is required to go through an approval process which is controlled by the user permissions system in ShipConstructor. Both penetration standards and the approval process serve to reduce costs by minimizing costly rework due to avoidable errors. |
Equipment
 |
ShipConstructor Equipment provides the ability to insert any type of equipment item into a ShipConstructor model. The equipment items can be modeled in almost any modeling software, including directly in AutoCAD, and then incorporated into the ShipConstructor database. At this point HVAC and Pipe connections are added as well as production specific attribute information. Once standards have been defined they are ready to be placed in the model. |
Distributed System Supports
 |
Distributed System Supports offers parametric design of supports based on standard industry supports. Supports are associated with pipe and pipe hangers as well as foundation structure to constrain and automatically adapt to design changes as the project progresses. The ability to generate support fabrication drawings linked to the model using Associative DWG technology provide a smooth transition from engineering to production.
|
Plan and Collaborate
ProducHierarchy
 |
The ProductHierarchy module is ShipConstructor's hub for production preparation. The build strategy is the primary product hierarchy, which defines the assembly sequence for the project. Every part produced in each of the various modules has a place in the Build Strategy. Planning and scheduling departments define the Build Strategy to optimize the logical sequence of assembly based on production capabilities together with need-by and procurement dates. ShipConstructor users report tremendous cost savings generated by implementing a better production planning process. All ShipConstructor production output functions are driven by the Build Strategy, allowing for near-automatic generation of production drawings and ease of work during such processes as just-in-time nesting. |
Project Split & Merge
 |
Project Split & Merge allows work on a single ShipConstructor project model at multiple locations using technology to merge distributed design back into a single ShipConstructor project. This empowers ShipConstructor users to leverage other company units or subcontractors to utilize diverse skill sets and increase industry competitiveness through aggressive production design schedules . Project Split & Merge tools, in combination with software permissions, allow the project lead to allocate responsibility for portions of the model to distributed design resources while maintaining control of the project and final design. |
Document and Deliver
Report
 |
ShipConstructor provides a flexible, powerful tool for generating non-graphical production information. The Report module allows for the definition of complex production detail reports that can be generated from the central project database on demand. With advanced features such as grouping, sorting, summary fields and full control over the visual aspects of the report, this tool provides the means to extract the information required for the entire team. Any report can be exported to formats such as Microsoft Excel for further calculation and analysis.
|
Nest/Automatic Nest
 |
ManualNest is tightly integrated into the central database, providing features to nest by assembly, stock, material, surface treatment, port/starboard, like/mirror cut, and full remnant control. Parts changes after nesting can be easily located and re-nested any time, ensuring error-free production. Automatic Nest allows you to automatically nest all plate parts; then use ManualNest to further optimize the results. |
Profile Nest
 |
ProfileNest performs linear nesting of profiles onto available stock to optimize utilization and streamline production, including available and used stock control, heat number tracking, and full production reports. Nests can be marked as issued and cut. Any item on such nests are now locked in the product model. |
Build and Maintain
NC-Pyros
 |
NC-Pyros reliably creates NC-Code for any type of NC-cutting machine, oxy-fuel, plasma, laser, water-jet, or router. The integration with the product model automatically feeds back important information, such as estimated cutting time, processing date, and operator name, completing report data and simplifying any recalls.
NC-Pyros-Bevel allows for adding variable angle cut and multi-torch weld preparation to NC-Pyros. |
